Job Summary

As a Structural Dynamics Engineer at BPMI, you will be responsible for evaluating dynamic, vibration, and shock loading effects and oversight of shock and vibration testing to ensure that structural acceptability and dynamic design requirements of Naval Nuclear Propulsion components are met. Technical evaluations performed within this role may require the application of engineering first principles, transient dynamic analysis, steady state vibration, modal analysis, signal processing, finite element methods, and programming skills. The role supports the development of structural, testing, and dynamic methods-based recommendations with opportunities to introduce new technologies and enhance Program capabilities relative to shock and vibration analysis.

Essential Duties:

– Assist with structural and shock/vibration evaluations and provide technical consultation and guidance on the analysis and design of power plant components to applicable design codes and standards.
– Apply commercial and proprietary computational codes to determine structural response of components to shock and vibration events, including response of ship structures and equipment to underwater shock. Research and apply new tools and technologies for performing dynamic analyses.
– Execute structural analysis utilizing skills such as: mechanical vibrations, structural dynamics, finite element analysis, thermal/mechanical analysis, fracture mechanics, heat transfer, fluid dynamics, and related technologies.
– Assist with reviewing and evaluating equipment specifications and vendor proposals for overall structural requirements.
– Assess adequacy of component structural evaluations and testing performed by suppliers to demonstrate the component structural integrity through independent verification and/or technical reviews.
– Represent BPMI at technical meetings with suppliers, other prime contractors, and the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program representatives.
– The essential duties identified are representative but are not intended to be an exhaustive or inclusive list of all the responsibilities of the position.

What You Can Expect:

– A culture that values people through recognition of accomplishments, work-life balance, and a sense of community.
– A diverse group of talented individuals working toward the common goal of supporting the United States Navy in their pursuit of national security.
– Competitive and attractive pay and benefits with a stable organization.
– Opportunities to participate in BPMI sponsored committees and clubs, each with their own mission and purpose.
– Career advancement and professional development programs.

Minimum Job Requirements:

– B.S in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Civil Engineering, Applied Mechanics, or related engineering field is required.
– Minimum GPA of 3.0 is preferred for newer college graduates.
– Requires a security clearance; however, all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of their current clearance status. The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy security clearance is required.

Preferred Job Requirements:

– Experience with signal processing software and manipulation of noisy data. Familiarity with accelerometer data streams and evaluation methods is a plus.
– Experience in performing structural dynamic analyses, such as modal analysis, shock response spectrum analysis, transient shock analysis, dynamic design analysis method (DDAM), and elastic-plastic modeling.
– Experience in mechanical analysis/design, with emphasis on structural analysis and material behavior equirements.
– Demonstrated experience using finite element analysis and computer-aided engineering techniques.
– Proven track record of effective written and verbal communication skills and creative problem-solving capabilities.
– Working knowledge of some or all of the following: engineering mechanics, structural dynamics, mechanical vibrations, heat transfer, fluid dynamics, or related technology.
