HIM Technician

Are you ready for a new challenge in healthcare? If so, this role may be for you! UPMC Somerset is looking to add a HIM Technician to join their Health Information team. This role works daylight hours with no holiday or weekend requirements. The Health Information team works closely with the local Switchboard team to provide cross coverage as needed.
As an HIM Technician, you will be responsible for the retrieval, distribution and filing of medical record information needed for patient care, finance, research, legal and filing/scanning purposes. Youll perform regular maintenance of medical record files (paper or electronic) including purging/pulling inactive medical records according to retention policy, shifting of permanent files as necessary to allow for an efficient and accurate filing system, repair of medical records, and utilization of imaging system.
Responsibilities:
Assemble legal health records accurately for regulatory reviews and court appearances.
Retrieve medical records from various electronic systems like MPAC, Cerner, EPIC, and more. Provide timely information to requestors.
Use the Master Patient Index (MPI) to confirm and correct patient data as needed.
Answer calls promptly and courteously, handling inquiries appropriately.
Build and maintain good relationships with medical staff, clinicians, and co-workers.
Prepare records for scanning, indexing, microfilming, or filing. Perform quality checks before and after these processes.
Keep the filing system organized, using color-coding to spot and correct misfiled charts.
Track all records leaving or returning to the HIM Department accurately.
Work with UPMC researchers to ensure compliance with PHI release procedures for research purposes.
High School diploma or equivalent is required.
1 year previous medical record department related experience preferred.
Prior medical terminology education and previous exposure to terminal digit filing preferred.
General knowledge of Pennsylvania and federal HIPAA regulations regarding proper release of information procedures preferred.
