Department Summary:
MITRE’s Software Engineering Innovation Center (SEIC) is one of the government’s largest resources dedicated entirely to software engineering; delivering capabilities that modernize legacy systems, that prototype ways to address unmet mission needs, and that deliver advanced functionality pushing the boundaries of what is possible. Each of MITRE’s R&D centers utilize our skills and expertise to address today’s cross-cutting technology challenges in domains like agile development, mobile computing, cloud engineering, cybersecurity, DevOps, human-machine teaming, user experience, virtual reality, robotics, artificial intelligence, decentralization and more.
The Software Solutions and Technology department within the SEIC focuses on hands-on software engineering, from prototyping to production. We are experts in developing mobile and web applications, collaboration platforms, data analytics solutions, cloud architectures, autonomous systems, machine learning use cases, and more to support a broad spectrum of local, national, and global missions across MITRE.
Roles & Responsibilities:
As an Associate Software Systems Engineer, you’ll be applying your hands-on experience to develop, evaluate, and integrate web-based applications for a variety of needs. Specific responsibilities might include:
Apply technical skills to design, implement, test, debug, and document applications.
Utilize knowledge and experience to choose from a variety of frameworks and languages to help prototype web or mobile apps.
Work closely with other engineers, designers, and leadership on evaluated existing solutions and brainstorming new applications or features.
Occasionally prepare and present technical briefings or communicate your work to enable collaboration across the team and company.
Keep pace with current and emerging technologies and their applications towards complex systems and challenges to inform your work or support new approaches.
Basic Qualifications:
Must be a U.S. citizen with the ability to possess/maintain a DoD Secret clearance.
Typically requires less than 1 year of related experience with a related Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Mathematics, or similar field, or equivalent combination of related education and work experience
Proven proficiency with at least one programming language such as Python, JavaScript, Java, or C#
Demonstrated experience prototyping/developing web or mobile applications.
Strong verbal and written communication through things like code, synchronous and asynchronous collaboration tools, pull-request discussions, documentation, proposals, and presentations.
This position requires a minimum of 50% hybrid on-site.
Preferred Qualifications:
Demonstrated ability to collaborate in distributed team environments, translate stakeholder needs into technical requirements, and follow-through on deliverables.
Demonstrated functional knowledge of all or multiple layers of the software stack such as servers, network and hosting environments, relational and non-relational databases, API integrations, user interfaces/experiences, quality assurance, version control systems, and security.
