General Services Facilities Maintenance Division is responsible for the repair and maintenance of over 250 city government facilities including: City Hall, Public Safety Building (Jail), Norfolk Consolidated Courts Complex, entertainment venues such as the Scope Arena, Chrysler Hall, Attucks Theater, the Virginia Zoo; a cruise terminal, all police and fire stations, recreation centers; pools and numerous city office buildings. The Division is staffed with 98 employees responsible for carpentry, plumbing, electrical, painting, HVAC, carpentry, elevators, roofing, moves and relocations of city employees, finance, and administrative functions.
The Department of General Services is seeking a Maintenance Mechanic II for the Facility Maintenance Division. The Maintenance Mechanic II will perform preventative maintenance on HVAC system components including commercial boilers, chillers, and air handler units along with making small repairs to building components and fixtures.
Essential Functions
Essential functions include but are not limited to:
Inspect and perform preventative maintenance on air handler units, roof top units, split AC units, and all associated equipment:
change filters and belts
check bolts, pulleys, motors, and pumps
lubricate bearings
clean equipment and clear drain lines and pans
Repair and/or replace HVAC system components pertaining to commercial boilers, chillers, and air handler units:
pumps
motors
valves
switches
transformers
connections
belts
pulleys
filters
Become familiar with the HVAC systems of assigned buildings to be able to coordinate needed program adjustments, repairs, or changes with Operating Engineers.
Keep mechanical spaces clean and clear of clutter/debris in all assigned buildings.
Perform safety preventative maintenance by inspecting fire extinguishers and emergency lighting.
Repair or replace plumbing fixtures, lighting, and various building components.
Repair, install, and/or move modular furniture system components, file cabinets, partitions, and other office case goods.
Obtain estimates for materials and/or services and submit for purchase order by following procurement procedure.
Use a work order management application (Facility Dude) to update assigned work orders with labor hours and materials used.
Education/Experience
Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational and technical processes. Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency.
Required:
Two years of experience as maintenance mechanic.
Preferred:
Experience performing preventative maintenance on commercial HVAC systems.
Additional Information & Requirements
Valid Drivers License required. A DMV transcript dated within 30 days will be required if selected for hire.
This position is designated as Essential and will be required to report to work during City
closures due to inclement weather and other emergencies.
Work Schedule:
Sunday – Thursday 3pm-11:30pm
Signing Bonus:
This position is eligible for a $5,000 signing bonus.

Temporary/seasonal and part-time employees are generally only eligible for employer provided parking and access to membership in credit union.
Retirement
If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant’s school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
