Job Summary: The outside machinist is responsible for installing the vessels machinery, such as propelling machinery, auxiliary motors, pumps, ventilating equipment, and steering gears.
Responsibilities: The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed and are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all responsibilities: Work from blueprints and use hand tools, calipers, and micrometers. Layout passage holes on bulkheads, decks, and other surfaces for connections, such as shafting and steam lines. Install below deck auxiliaries, such as evaporators, stills, heaters, pumps, condensers, and boilers, and connect them to steam pipe systems. Responsible for testing and inspecting installed machinery and equipment during dock and sea trials. May set up and operate machine shop tools such as lathes, boring mills, planers, shapers, slotters, and milling machines to fabricate replacement parts.
Desired Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of gauges, calipers, micrometers, lathes, boring mills, planers, shapers, slotters, and milling machines.
Capable of reading blueprints.
Desired Experience and Training: Prior experience as an outside machinist or boilermaker in a heavy industrial or shipbuilding environment. Vocational training in the field of machinists is helpful. Minimal 3.5 years of experience.
