Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must have a valid Louisiana Teaching Certificate which includes certification in the area of employment as specified by Bulletin 746, Revised, Louisiana Department of Education.

For teaching positions, there may be additions and alternatives to the above qualifications as the Office of Juvenile Justice may determine to be appropriate.

50% of a teachers evaluation will be based on professional practice (a qualitative measure) using the La. Components of Effective Teaching in conjunction with 50% on growth in student achievement.

Measures of student growth will be aligned with the Office of Juvenile Justice criteria in compliance with Bulletin 130 guidelines.

Any college hours or degrees must be from a school accredited by one of the six regional accreditation organizations recognized by the US Dept. of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.

Job Concepts

The school counseling program shall be conducted in accordance with policies adopted by the Board of Education and with regulations and procedures of the district.

Use techniques that develop lesson objectives.

Use available curriculum materials and equipment in the teaching/learning process.

Present accurate subject matter and relate relevant examples.

Examples of Work

Duties/Examples of Work (the below are examples and not all possible tasks are included):

Organize environment and instruction to facilitate learning.

Write lesson plans for individual and group instruction.

Assist in recruitment of students and maintain regular and reliable attendance.

Maintain and improve professional skills and knowledge.

Prepare bi-weekly performance reports and communicate with OJJ central office.

Arrange lectures by experts in designated fields.

Participate in conferences, seminars, and training sessions to keep abreast of developments in the field, and integrate relevant information into training programs.

Make the course relevant to the student and “real life” by using subject matter content, academics, and industry specifications.

Organize and prioritize duties and responsibilities.

Maintain good communication with all staff.

Adapt to periodic heavy workload.

Follow all OJJ/DOE policies and procedures, including maintaining student and other required records.

Serve on faculty and school committees.

Review applications and correspond with applicants concerning program vacancies.

Use diverse teaching strategies to meet students learning styles, abilities, and interests.

Be flexible and receptive to change.

Communicate ideas and concepts clearly and concisely in both oral and written form.

Submit all lessons, attendance, grades, etc. by the deadlines given.

Perform all other duties assigned by immediate supervisor, Principal, and by the Youth Facility Director
