Position Overview:

The primary role of the Nursing Assistant (NA) is to work under the direction of the staff RN as a member of the care delivery team for the patient population they serve, within the scope of their practice. The Nursing Assistant performs patient care activities and other unit tasks as delegated by the Staff RN to support the interdisciplinary care team.

JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES

Patient Care Process

• Provides non-judgmental care towards all patients, regardless of lifestyle, race, religion or beliefs

• Performs basic patient care activities related to bathing/hygiene, feeding/nourishment, positioning/comfort, ambulation, elimination and safety as assigned.

• Demonstrates early recognition of potential and developing problems and reports them to the direct care RN

• Clarifies role expectations of patient care duties with direct care RN throughout the day

• Demonstrates good time management / organizational skills by the end of the shift

• Completes clerical / unit activities by the end of the shift

• Prioritizes patient care duties to ensure that patient safety needs are met

• Demonstrates the ability to handle the assigned workload within shift limits

• Takes accountability for responding quickly and appropriately to inquiries, requests and call lights

• On time to work and ready to start

• Offers assistance to others as time allows in order to complete all work assignments on unit

• Demonstrates flexibility in compliance with staffing and other unit work routines

• Participates in unit performance improvement process as assigned

• Participates in maintaining safe working environment for patient / colleagues

• Assists in the performance of various tasks associated with the patient admission, transfer and discharge or transportation to other units/departments as required

• Performs and documents basic assignment activities such as taking and recording temperature, pulse, respiratory rate, blood pressure, weight, intake / output and other measurements as applicable in an accurate and precise manner

• Performs simple basic care procedures

• Performs patient hygiene

• Turns patients every two hours or more frequently

• Performs limited specific procedures such as specimen collection, assisting with patient examination, checking intactness of IV therapy and performing simple treatments

• Identifies patients at high risk for potential injury and acts to minimize risks

• Maintains safe working environment, able to verbalize potential safety hazards and how to deal with them

• Identifies at risk situations and maintains preventive measures (falls, preventive skin care, protective restraint, isolation)

• Positions, transfers and ambulates patients

• Promotes patient safety in the work environment by maintaining appropriate safety measures, call bell in reach, side rails up, proper patient alignment

• Performs duties of a “Safety Sitter”

Leadership / Teamwork

• Is able to carry a full patient assignment and meet the needs of each individual patient

• Is able to anticipate and handle unexpected situations

• Manages multiple priorities systematically, keeping team members informed of the plan

• Is self-directed, resolving minor problems on own and if unable utilizes chain of command

• Fosters a positive attitude towards department and facility. Shows awareness of impact of own behavior on others

• Seeks validation/guidance when necessary to clarify job duties

• Consults direct care RN when seeking solutions on patient care problems

• Informs direct care RN of any changes in patient s condition

• Communicates changes in patient condition to charge nurse

• Deals with interpersonal conflicts directly and in private, reporting irreconcilable differences and unprofessional behavior to Nursing Director / Manager in an appropriate and timely manner

• Initiates activities when patient census is down, stocking rooms, cleaning up different areas within the unit

• Demonstrate support for team members, to ensure the team accomplishes goals. Exemplifies team loyalty

• Seeks out constructive feedback. Shares opinions with respect

• Problem solves independently at their level, escalates when necessary

Clinical Technical Skills

• Demonstrates ability to operate all equipment required to perform job safely, per manufacture guidelines and hospital policy

• Maintains a safe, uncluttered working environment (patient rooms, nursing station) ensures all egresses are easily accessible

• Reports concerns that impact safe patient unit operations to charge RN

• Maintains department specific skills

• Utilizes patient mobilization equipment

• Completes all trainings on time

Communication

• Communicates using lines of authority as appropriate to ensure quality patient care

• Answers patient call bells / phone calls courteously and timely

• Establishes positive rapport with patients, families/support systems, physicians and co-workers

• Communicates with patients, family/support systems in a positive professional manner, answers questions as needed

• Utilizes closed loop communication to ensure messages are received and acknowledged to ensure safe patient care

• Demonstrates courteous oral/telephone skills

Professional Growth & Development

• Accepts responsibility for own actions and takes a proactive approach to problem resolution

• Takes responsibility to become familiar with new process or procedures and to get checked off within required time frame

• Acknowledges own limitations and seeks help when needed.

• Identifies own learning needs and follows through to gain needed knowledge and experience

• Continuing education is related to specific area of practice and documented in employee file

• Working towards Vocational or Registered Nursing license , higher education (BSN or MSN) to increase knowledge base

• Participates in unit specific or hospital projects / committees

• Works towards ensuring goals set in prior evaluation are met

EDUCATION

Equivalent experience will be accepted in lieu of the required degree or diploma.

HS Diploma or equivalent education/experience

OR Other: RN/LVN student

If RN or LVN student, must be enrolled in accredited School of Nursing/ Vocational Nursing and have completed 2 semesters of clinical experience if in RN program and 1 semester clinical experience if in Vocational program.

CERTIFICATION & LICENSURE

CNA-Certified Nurse Assistant Upon Hire

BLS-Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider Upon Hire

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE AS TYPICALLY ACQUIRED IN:

Six months of basic Medical / Surgical acute care experience or 2 semesters of clinical experience if enrolled in RN program or 1 semester if in Vocational program

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

Basic Medical/Surgical nursing aide skills,

Basic competencies in the nursing process and pharmacology

Basic knowledge of adolescent, adult and geriatric population

Ability to work with all levels of nursing personnel and assist them in a resource capacity

Effective English written and verbal communication skills.

Pay Range is $27.45 to $34.48 / hour

The salary range for this role may vary above or below the posted range as determined by location. This range has not been adjusted for any specific geographic differential applicable by area where the position may be filled. Compensation takes into account several factors including but not limited to a candidate’s experience, education, skills, licensure and certifications, department equity, training and organizational needs. Base pay is just one piece of the total rewards program offered by Sutter Health. Eligible roles also qualify for a comprehensive benefits package.
