The Juarez Lab (https://www.thejuarezlab.com/) at the University of Maryland-Baltimore (Baltimore, MD)is seeking to hire acontractual Laboratory Research Assistant. The candidate will assist with the development of projects focused on molecular mechanisms of decision-making behaviors for natural and drug reward in rodent models. The Juarez lab uses circuit dissecting viral based CRISPR/Cas9 gene-editing and methods to manipulate neural activity in animal models of stress and substance-use disorders. Ability to handle mice is highly desired. Background knowledge or experience in mouse behavior, colony management, molecular biology (PCR, gel electrophoresis) is preferred, but not required. Primary Duties: Perform routine laboratory maintenance and research activities such as: mouse colony maintenance, general housekeeping, immunohistochemisry, electrophoresis, molecular cloning, and DNA extractions, etc. Perform advanced laboratory research activities such as: animal behavior, microscopy techniques, imaging techniques, recombinant DNA techniques, plasmid purification, and animal surgery. Compile and may analyze research data using various relevant computer software applications. Perform administrative duties such as: training and guiding students and/or other laboratory technicians; assisting in developing policies, procedures, and/or methods for laboratory experimentation; and ordering supplies. May participate in the design of research studies. Perform other duties as assigned. Education:Bachelors degree in biology, chemistry or field of study related to the research of the laboratory. Preferred Experience:At least two years of experience working in a laboratory and animal environment. Knowledgeable in data entry and/or word processing and/or data analysis and using spreadsheets and statistical analysis preferred. Research experience in biochemistry, molecular biology, rodent behavior, and/or tissue culture techniques. Other:May require training related to occupational safety and health, environmental compliance, shipping of hazardous materials and/or ionizing radiation. May consider a combination of directly related experience and education. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Knowledge of position requirements. Ability to effectively communicate both verbal and written thoughts, ideas, and facts. Ability to work cooperatively with others and independently.
