Summary About the Position: Serves as an Animal Health Technician (Leader) at Veterinary Center (VETCEN) Fort Belvoir responsible for performing complicated technical procedures involving diagnostic imaging, surgery, medicine, critical or general care, or any combination of veterinary support work. Licensed Veterinary Technician, Certified Veterinary Technician, Registered Veterinary Technician or Equivalent Licensure is preferred. Responsibilities Analyze findings to give a grading based on sanitation and welfare standards Responsible for medical care of Military Working Dogs (MWDs) and Government Owned Animals (GOAs) assigned to and under the care of Belvoir Branch. Leads the Veterinary Center (VETCEN) technician personnel and oversees VETCEN schedule and logistics. Ensure that new personnel are trained and familiarized with equipment, procedures, and safety requirements Review dosage calculations of junior veterinary technicians for correct dosages and accuracy in record keeping. Monitor vital signs and anesthetic depth. Provide recommendations to vet, kennel, installation and command leadership on animal housing and veterinary facilities. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes modifying and/or reviewing documents; helping train Military Working Dog medical staff or handlers; and assisting Veterinarian with various medical procedures/examinations. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07). OR Education: Masters or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: Zoology, Biology, Chemistry, or Agricultural subjects. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.) OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Animal Husbandry Medicine and Dentistry Safety and Quality Care Teaches Others Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-07). Additional Information All animal care medical duties are performed under the direction of a certified veterinarian and comply with American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC), and Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) guidelines to maintain certification and accreditation. All animal care medical duties also comply with Veterinary Medical Standards Board(VMSB) and Defense Health Agency, Medical Readiness Command East, Public Health Command East, Veterinary Readiness Activity Fort Belvoir, and Fort Belvoir Branch policies and guidelines to maintain certification and accreditation. Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration. You will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship.
