Position Description Summary

APT Research is hiring a Software Safety Engineer to perform independent safety analysis of DoD aviation platforms and ground munitions systems in support of the Software, Simulation, Systems Engineering and Integration (S3I) Directorate and the Strategic and Operational Rockets and Missiles (STORM) Project Office on Redstone Arsenal, AL.

Tasks include (but are not limited to):

Conducting safety requirements analysis to flow-down Safety requirements and safety attributes to software/hardware products under development

Conducting software code analyses

Participating in the Software Safety Verification process to ensure Safety Significant requirements are adequately tested

Reviewing software design descriptions and development-related documents

Supporting monthly Sprint planning reviews, weekly Integrated Product Team meetings, and participating in Software Configuration Control Board (SCCB) meetings

Producing and coordinating documentation needed to develop system safety cases, and provide safety inputs for materiel release of multiple missile and launcher systems

Producing and compiling documentation for reviews by the Software Systems Safety Review Panels (SSSTRP), Fuze Boards, Weapon System Explosives Safety Review Boards (WSESRB), and other government review boards.

Reviewing and providing recommendations on safety engineering program plans as well as establishing safety test requirements, test plans, and test reporting criteria

Developing and reviewing Functional Hazard Analysis (FHA), Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), and/or Failure Mode, Effects & Critically Analysis (FMECA)

Required Experience/Education:

US Citizenship required.

ABET accredited BS degree in an Engineering discipline or safety related field

Minimum of 4 years of relevant Safety experience

Minimum of 5 years of relevant Aviation experience

Experience in Software safety

Knowledge of software development standards, safety principles, regulations, and practices including experience carrying out hazard control techniques as well as conducting risk analysis on DOD aviation systems

Detailed working knowledge of MIL-STD-882E, DO-278A, JSSEH, AMCOM Regulation 385-17, SAE ARP 4761, or similar safety standards

Ability to travel up to 10%

Security Clearance Requirement:

An active secret security clearance is required.

Preferred Experience:

Knowledge of Air and Missile Defense System

Knowledge of Microsoft Project and DOORS

Knowledge of Static and Dynamic Code Analysis

Knowledge of Structural Coverage Analysis

Experience with Model Based Software Development

Work Environment:

Work will be performed in a hybrid environment, including telework and on-site at S3I facilities and the Strategic and Operational Rockets and Missiles (STORM) Project Office on Redstone Arsenal.

Requires in-person attendance at weekly project-related meetings

Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate, and timely communication, both verbally and written

Ability to interact professionally with coworkers, management, and customers

Travel Requirements:

Requires ability to travel up to 10%

Physical Requirements:

Requires sitting for extended periods of time at a workstation / desk

Other Essential Functions:

Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgement
