Positions in this level conduct vehicle or foot patrol to detect criminal activity, respond to communication orders, investigate and gather evidence at the scene, request assistance or emergency aid, establish and maintain control of situations, direct and control crowds and traffic, issue citations or warrants, restrain and take persons into custody, prepare reports and records, and follow-up on incidents or suspected activities. Positions prepare evidence and reports for prosecution and testify in court as witnesses.

Positions may give community service presentations on safety and crime prevention or detection methods or programs. By statue, positions are commissioned as peace officers. Basic peace officer definitions re found in C.R.S. 16-2.5-105,16-2.5-120 and 16-2.5-139 with specific authorities for individual agencies or departments found in their supporting statues or delegation made by executive directors, president, or governing boards.

The work may involve conducting safety training; providing first aid; and providing security escort service, as well as participating in crime prevention, community relations, or drug awareness programs.

The officer will be occasionally required to climb stairs, scale barriers, drag/carry injured persons, subdue combative subjects, push stalled vehicles and may go from sedentary to highly physical activity rapidly. At times the environment may be stressful, including contact with injured, deceased, and distressed persons, requiring interaction with resistive, combative, assaultive, and aggressive behavior; dealing with frequent criticism, close oversight, subject to criminal and civil penalties for conduct.

The position is will be subject to hazardous materials at accidents, fires, or natural/environmental disasters; danger of assault by persons with deadly weapons, and working near vehicular traffic.

Proactively patrols the campus and its facilities by vehicle or on foot to detect and deter criminal activity, and assists the campus community members as the need arises..

Conducts interviews with victims, complainants, witnesses, and suspects within the guidelines of current legal practices. Prepares written reports documenting investigations of criminal and suspicious activity for actual or suspected statutory violations, institutional policy and procedure violations.

Prepares cases for presentation in Municipal, County, and District Courts.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:

Current, valid Colorado Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) certification

One year of experience in an occupational field related to the work assigned to the position

Substitutions:

Appropriate education will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis

Conditions of Employment:

Must be at least 21 years of age; possess a valid Colorado Driver license and have no:

Felony convictions (statutorily Defined)

Domestic violence convictions

Acquiring more than seven points in the last year and/or more than 12 points within the last two years on a drivers license.

Alcohol/drug related traffic convictions in the last three years and repeat alcohol/drug convictions after the age of 18 within the last ten years.

Physical and psychological evaluations are required in accordance with section 24-31-303(5)(b), C.R.S.

Knowledge of current and best legal and investigative practices

Community Policing practices as related to a higher education institutional setting

Necessary Special requirements:

This position requires that the employee be available to work 7 days a week, and/ or in rotating shifts to include holidays, weekends and semester breaks. Also required to work possibly in inclement weather conditions. The employee must be able to respond as required to emergency call-out situations. This position is designated as an essential service position and employee is required to be on duty to perform essential and/or emergency services of the agency without delay and/or interruption.
