Job Summary
The Transmission Operations Engineer is responsible for providing engineering and technical support to the Transmission Control Center to enable the safe, economic, and reliable operation of the electric generation, transmission and substation systems.
Job Responsibilities
Include but are not limited to:
Responsible for the scheduling of generation and transmission tie-line outages to ensure appropriate levels of power supply to meet forecasted load demand, in coordination with work scheduled by Transmission Outage Planners
Support the release and commissioning process for new transmission and substation equipment
Support the review of Engineering one-Lines within Transmission Operations for capital improvements
Assist with the development and maintenance of electrical equipment facility ratings in SCADA databases to ensure reliable electric system operation in compliance with NERC standards.
Maintain and support Transmission Security Management (TSM) network model subsystems within the SCADA Energy Management System which includes the state estimator, contingency analysis and dispatcher training simulator functions. This process involves developing and implementing modeling changes to reflect configuration changes on the electric transmission system.
Create, maintain and update reports relating to the normal and emergency operation of the electric system (voltage reduction, transmission and substation equipment ratings, alarm settings, under-frequency settings, generation capability curves, load reductions, etc.)
Participate, as required, on various industry councils and committees (ie. NYISO Operating Committee, NYISO System Operating Advisory Committee (SOAS), New York State Reliability Council (NYSRC), NYISO Transmission Operations Working Group (NYTOPWG))
Assist in the delivery of training for System Operators
Interface with various divisions and departments to track the progress of resolutions to operating problems.
Perform system and operating studies as required to reflect planned work and real-time conditions during peak and other unique system configurations.
Support, maintain and provide appropriate documentation to ensure LIPA compliance with all regulating agencies (NERC, NPCC, NYSRC, etc.).
Attend the New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) Training Seminar twice a year.
Job Specific Qualifications
Required:
B.S. in Engineering (Electrical, Civil or Mechanical)
Minimum of 4 years of relevant engineering utility experience
Applicants will be required to take and pass an approved aptitude test in order to be considered for this position.
Comprehensive computer skills and the ability to quickly learn new programs or programming languages.
Leadership and excellent interpersonal skills. The successful candidate will be expected to work with other professionals in a team-oriented and sometimes stressful environment.
Ability to handle multiple tasks at one time and be able to prioritize work and provide leadership during critical system events.
Must be confident making decisions often with limited input and extreme time constraints.
Excellent problem solving skills.
Proficient written and clear oral communication skills.
The successful candidate will be required to obtain NERC Transmission Operator certification within one year of taking the position.

Desired:
Preference will be given to those applicants whose experience includes working with Visual Basic, Excel, and Access.
