Job Description

The English Department at Old Dominion University invites applicants for part-time Adjunct instructional faculty teach 100- and 200- level sections of in-person General Education Composition and Literature courses. We are currently seeking individuals for Fall 2024, but this post may remain open for additional applications as opportunities arise throughout the 2024-2025 academic year. Those selected will be hired as part of an adjunct pool, which will be utilized as needed based on which courses are in need of coverage. We tend to have the greatest need for instructors who can teach daytime, on-campus courses between 8:00 AM and 3:00 PM, most often in General Education Composition but sometimes also in General Education Literature.

Minimum Qualifications – knowledge, skills, and abilities

Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Experience with Microsoft Office.

Preparation and/or experience teaching introductory-level courses in literature and/or composition at the college level.

Minimum Qualifications – Education or training

M.A., M.F.A., or Ph.D. in English or M.A. or Ph.D. in closely-related field with a minimum of 18 hours graduate credit hours in English courses.

Minimum Qualifications – Special licenses, registration or certification

Preferred Qualifications

Availability to teach in-person on Old Dominion University’s Norfolk, VA, campus between the hours of 8:00 AM and 3:00 PM, AND one or more of the following:

For Literature: ability to teach across genre and period specialties and to include a diverse selection of texts and voices.

For Composition: expertise and experience in writing studies pedagogies such as WAC / WID , multi-modality, anti-racism, and/or universal design for learning.
