HX5 is currently seeking a Cryogenic Design Engineer with experience designing cryogenic fluid systems to join our team in Cleveland, Ohio in support of the GEARS contract at NASA Glenn Research Center.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
An experienced Cryogenic Design Engineer is needed to design a cryogenic tank-to-tank chill-down and transfer/resupply system that will be ground tested at NASA Glenn Research Center. The purpose of the experiment is to evaluate the performance of and test different cryogenic liquid injection concepts and different tank chill-down methods to determine which injectors and chill-down methods reduce propellant consumption as well as which methods reduce transfer complexity.
Required Knowledge and Skills:
Experience in fluid systems & components, cryogenics, safety, vacuum systems, thermal heating & insulation systems, evaporative heat exchangers, heated liquid vaporizers, and electrical systems.
Familiar with the use and application of National Consensus Standards to include: ASME B31.3, ASME Section VIII, NFPA 55, NFPA 70 and GLM-QS-1700.1 “GRC Safety Manual”.
Ability to efficiently communicate with expert consultants.
Experience with designing mechanical hardware:
o Very proficient in the use of Creo CAD software.
o SolidWorks experience is also desirable.
o Sizing and specifying fluid system components such as valves, fittings & piping.
Experience with Research and Testing support in following areas:
o Cryogenic Engineering – the individual should have some experience working with cryogenic fluids, especially liquid hydrogen.
o Cryogenic Testing – the individual should have experience in testing cryogenic systems, understanding the basics of instrumentation and test hardware.
o Data management and organization – the individual should have some experience working with large quantities of data and interpreting testing results.
o Documentation – the individual should be comfortable writing clear and coherent reports on complicated systems.
Other Desired Skills:
Creative and hands-on mechanical experience.
Team oriented with the ability to work independently.
Licensed professional engineer.
Education/Experience:
Mechanical, Chemical, or Aerospace Engineering degree with one of the following combinations of education and experience:
Bachelors degree with more than 10 years of experience
Masters degree with more than 6 years of experience
Ph.D. with up to 3 years of experience
Other Position Requirements:
Proof of U.S. Citizenship or US Permanent Residency is a requirement for this position.
Must be able to complete a U.S. government background investigation.
