Position Summary
HIGHLIGHTS
SUNY Geneseo is searching for an experienced and positive candidate to become our new Head Janitor. In this role, you will be responsible for effectively leading a team of 100 subordinates, including Supervising Janitors, Janitors, and Cleaners for Academics and Resident Halls.
Your responsibilities will include (but are not limited to):
Administering a program of systematic cleaning and care of assigned building areas following established guidelines
Planning and scheduling staff assignments which can include reassigning staff to ensure work is accomplished according to schedule, staff is fully utilized, and emergency cleanings are handled
Informing staff of policies and directives in meetings and memoranda.
Inspecting buildings and assigned areas for compliance with cleaning guidelines and investigating complaints of unsatisfactory cleaning performance
Preparing the annual equipment, supplies, and personnel budget for the custodial operation
Resolving disciplinary problems and recommending retention or termination of employees
Training staff on proper use of all equipment and supplies
Approving time cards and requests for leave
Providing instructions to staff for requested special cleaning services which vary from routine operations.
If you are not eligible by way of the Civil Service list or transfer, you may be eligible to be hired provisionally. You would need to have taken the exam for Head Janitor held on March 23, 2024. When scores are released, you will need to have scored high enough to be reachable to achieve permanent appointment. If not, you will be removed from the position.
Required Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates must have permanent appointment in a Head Janitor, SG-15 classified position or be reachable for appointment on the current New York State Civil Service canvass list for SUNY Geneseo’s are location for a Head Janitor, SG-15 position, or, be transfer eligible.

For Provisional Appointment Eligibility: applicant must have taken the Head Janitor exam offered on March 23, 2024.
New York State preferred list candidates have preference.
Preferred Qualifications
DEPARTMENTAL OPERATING NEEDS
Record of dependability and past work performance, including satisfactory time and attendance record.
Possession of computer skills adequate to work with computerized maintenance management systems and other computerized applications as assigned.
Ability to understand and follow instructions, and read, write and communicate.
Experience in a leadership role.
Possession of a valid New York State driver’s license.

Function 1: Leadership and Supervision
Inform staff of college policy and procedures along with adherence to workplace protocols.
Evaluate staff performance and conduct routine building inspections.
Ensure efficient and effective use of time by staff by such means as enforcing attendance rules, resolving disciplinary problems and meeting established work schedules.
Recommend retention or termination of probationary employees.
Provide instructions to staff for requested special cleaning services which vary from routine operations, including the development of training programs to comply with sustainability directives.
