GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION
Maintain the nursing program laboratories, including simulation, assist with teaching skills to faculty, students and community partners, teach classroom and/or clinical, evaluate student progress, develop instructional plans, advise students, maintain records and prepare a variety of reports as requested; in conjunction with the Course Coordinator, implement, supervise, and evaluate lab and simulation activities for the ADN students.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing
Current unrestricted North Carolina License to function as a registered nurse.
Two years full-time direct patient care as a registered nurse
Attain/maintain teaching requirements per the NCBON, which reads: (g) Nurses licensed pursuant to this Chapter who are full-time and part-time faculty and who teach in a program leading to initial licensure as a nurse shall:
1. Hold an active unencumbered license or multistate licensure privilege to practice as a registered nurse in North Carolina
2. hold either a baccalaureate in nursing or a graduate degree in nursing from an accredited institution.
3. have two calendar years or the equivalent of full-time clinical experience as a registered nurse. A full-time registered nurse is a registered nurse employed by the program who is regularly assigned to work at least 40 hours each week in a position.
4. Full time faculty shall hold a graduate degree from an accredited institution or obtain a graduate degree in nursing from an accredited institution within five years of initial full-time employment.
5. prior to or within the first three years of employment, have education in teaching and learning principles for adult education, including curriculum development, implementation, and evaluation, appropriate to faculty assignment. Once completed, this preparation need not be repeated if employing organization is changed. This education may be demonstrated by one of the following:
(A) completion of forty-five contact hours of Board-approved continuing education courses.
(B) completion of a certificate program in nursing education.
(C) nine semester hours of graduate course work in adult learning and learning principles.
(D) national certification in nursing education; or
(E) documentation of successful completion of structured, individualized development activities of at least forty-five contact hours approved by the Board.
Criteria for approval shall include content in the faculty role in the curriculum implementation, curricular objectives to be met and evaluated, review of
strategies for identified student population, and expectations of student and faculty performance; or
(F) individuals with prior teaching experience in an academic setting seeking a faculty position shall be evaluated by the Program Director to assess each
individuals prior teaching experience commensurate with formal education in teaching and learning principles for adult education including curriculum
development, implementation, and evaluation, appropriate to faculty assignment.
6. maintain competence in the areas of assigned responsibility; and
7. maintain competence pursuant to Rule .0232 of this Chapter in the new areas of assigned responsibility
Preferred:
Graduate Degree in Nursing strongly preferred.
Simulation certification, such a Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE) or other formal simulation training
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Teach program material via seated and online classes as required by the schedule.
Learn new material to keep up with changing technology.
Facilitate regular and substantive interaction via proactive communication with students.
Participate in recruiting for new students.
Ensure classrooms, labs, and lab equipment are in good repair and maintain a safe environment for students and employees.
Serve as a mentor to students in your area of expertise.
Contact out-of-state students via email or pos al mail with information related to program compliance with licensure requirements in their state of residence as required by the U.S. Department of Education.
OTHER DUTIES
Assess course student learning outcomes, updating as needed
Assist and advise the Associate VP of Health Sciences and Human Services to ensure instructional excellence
Assist students with career opportunities in conjunction with Student Services
Assist the Nursing Program Director in preparation of reports for the College, approval and accrediting agencies
Conduct student advising conferences related to student progress
Coordinate, supervise, and evaluate student performance in nursing lab and simulation settings
Create, administer, grade and maintain records for exams, projects, activities and reports for evaluation of students in courses
Establish and maintain industry contacts, which includes arranging guest speakers, field trips, etc.
Instruct in nursing courses as assigned (18-22 contact hours per semester)
Maintain simulation hospital to meet nursing program needs
Monitor and evaluate program outcomes annually
Order training equipment and supplies
Participate in annual Nursing Advisory Board meeting
Participate in programming simulators and development of simulation and lab activities
Participate in course and curriculum revision
Participate in professional development, college-wide and as appropriate to position
Participate in the development/maintenance of learning management material for nursing courses
Participate in and collaboratively develop intraprofessional and interprofessional student learning activities
Perform other duties incidental to the work described herein
Seek and evaluate student services in the interest of nursing students
Seek, evaluate and maintain instructional materials and equipment
Serve as contact or instructor for training needs (i.e., BLS, ACLS)
Serve on a variety of committees, college-wide and professional
Other duties as assigned
Other Services to Students
Maintain appropriate accessibility for students, including a minimum of five office hours a week.
Serve as an educational mentor to assigned students by providing academic and employment planning.
Maintain regular, appropriate, professional communication with students.
Participate in semester advising and registration activities as needed.
Verify graduation degree audits as assigned.
Assist in the recruitment and retention efforts of the College.
Advocate and provide motivation for students.
Communicate student needs to Program Head or Department Head.
Divisional Administrative Expectations
Prepare and submit instructional records, reports, grades, and all other required paperwork in a timely, efficient manner meeting all deadlines, checking for accuracy, correctness, and completeness of all data.
Remain current in discipline and instructional methods through professional development activities offered by the College and other opportunities including attendance at off-campus activities, webinars, etc., as approved.
Participate in annual planning, program and curriculum review.
Serve on and actively contribute to college committees as assigned.
Participate in campus activities.
Participate in discipline, departmental, divisional, and institutional meetings and other announced co-curricular activities of the College.
Maintain regular, professional communication within the college and affiliated industry contacts.
