The Intelligence Systems Engineering Department (N931), within the MITRE Intelligence Center, applies broad national and strategic intelligence expertise and deep understanding of our Sponsors mission challenges to develop and advance complex human and technical solutions which enable present and future success from tactical to enterprise levels. We develop and apply innovative solutions, thought leadership, and evidence-based recommendations that deliver high impact to our Sponsors’ missions. We are seeking a Lead Artificial Intelligence Engineering Professional to join our team, which is primarily centered on the McLean campus; project assignments may require work at various Sponsor locations in the Northern Virginia/Washington DC metro area (generally within 25 miles of MITRE McLean).
Roles and Responsibilities:
We are seeking a versatile and adaptive mid-senior professional who can consistently deliver mission impact and high-quality results on projects in direct support of our IC sponsors. Our portfolio of projects covers a broad range of enterprise IT systems engineering work and includes several emerging technology engineering and integration disciplines, including artificial intelligence and closely related technologies. The selected candidate may be asked to lead or contribute to a single project, or to provide support across some combination of efforts where their expertise not only advances each but connects between them.
Depending on the size and scope of each project, you may be expected to work in a variety of modes:
Solo: as an autonomous subject matter expert and trusted advisor supporting a government organization primarily through your own expertise, leveraging additional capabilities as needed by reaching back to MITRE;
Team Leader: as the principal MITRE representative responsible to deliver results through effectively coordinated action involving other MITRE staff;
Team Member: as a recognized expert in one or more technical disciplines or domains and member of a project team.
Typical responsibilities in similar positions include:
Provide broad systems engineering and program management support based on expert knowledge, experience, and understanding of the sponsor’s domain and mission challenges;
Perform hands-on business and technical analysis and execute studies to inform recommendations for improvement across the full spectrum of the sponsor technology problem space;
Work in a dynamic environment addressing cutting edge artificial intelligence technology and domain challenges and develop promising approaches to novel problems where solutions do not yet exist;
Lead small teams of domain and/or subject matter experts to address specific technical, programmatic, or business challenges;
Apply and substantiate technical and domain judgement and make recommendations to advance the Sponsor’s technology, concepts, processes, and outcomes;
Contribute to teams with expertise in one or more of the following areas: Systems Engineering; Requirements Engineering; Systems Architecture; Risk Management; Quality Management; Process Analysis and Improvement; Performance Engineering; Human-Machine Interaction;
Provide technical contributions to formal studies, such as Analysis of Alternatives (AoA), Course of Action (CoA), Trade Studies, Engineering Assessments, or similar inquiries tailored to the sponsor’s mission, operating environment, and challenges;
Provide technical support to the sponsor in strategic technical planning, project management and control, risk management, and related programmatic disciplines;
Collaborate and lead/participate in initiatives to ensure effective knowledge creation, sharing, and management within and across work teams.
Basic Qualifications:
Applicants MUST hold an active TS/SCI clearance to be considered.
Requires minimum: 8 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; 6 years of related experience with a Master’s degree; 3 years of related experience with a Ph.D.; or an equivalent combination of related education and work experience.
Broad knowledge and technical depth, gained through recent relevant experience as a working leader and technical contributor in systems engineering, systems integration, enterprise information technology, artificial intelligence, machine learning, human language technology, data science/analytics, program management, technology insertion and adoption, innovation, and adjacent or related project work.
Broad knowledge of associated intelligence agency/community mission challenges and needs, and the capabilities and technology solutions that they require to address those needs.
Proven ability to collaborate and develop strong collegial relationships in order to nurture teamwork and support technical talent development for our staff and teams.
A consistent track record of success in developing strategic relationships with senior leaders and sponsors – and converting those relationships into impactful outcomes on major initiatives, technical challenges, and priorities.
Ability to decompose and translate complex programs and concepts and make them accessible for diverse consumers (engineers, operators, analysts, program managers, executive leaders; government staff, contractors, and partners; etc.).
Ability to assemble, integrate, and synthesize disparate elements or activities to explain how they contribute to support for a strategic mission objective or outcome.
Experience translating operational mission needs into acquisition, technical, and programmatic requirements.
Excellent critical and strategic thinking abilities, as well as written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to create win-win solutions with a positive “make it happen” attitude.
This position requires a minimum of 4 days a week on-site.
Preferred Qualifications:
Active TS/SCI clearance with Polygraph is preferred.
Advanced degree (MS/MEng) in engineering, science, mathematics, computer science, engineering management, or other related field.
Understanding of organizational policies, priorities, and missions for US Government intelligence entities.
Familiarity with US Government intelligence collection and supporting enterprise information technologies and programs.
Familiarity with USGC-A operational environments, threats, and complexities.
Demonstrated experience with work program strategy development and execution.
Successful participation in end-to-end system development activities from CONOPS to operations.
Experience translating operational mission needs into acquisition, technical, and/or programmatic requirements.
DAWIA Program Management Level II or III.
PMP certification.
