This position is a sub-professional Nursing Work involving more specialized and advanced non-professional nursing procedures to provide the personal care to assist in recuperation or rehabilitation of residents/patients. This position supervises and manages a resident/patient care service consisting of a number of wards during an assigned shift. This involves specific nursing assignments and will be responsible for total resident/patient care. Will provide comfort, maintain cleanliness and safety for the residents/patients.

Applicants who are certified with the Louisiana Nurse Aide Registry as a Certified Nursing Assistant may be given preference for this position.

This position has a Special Entrance Rate of $16.45/hour.

This position offers additional pay: Longevity Pay and Shift Differential Pay

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Four years of experience in psychiatric patient care or in providing care, guidance or training to the developmentally disabled, physically disabled, or chemically dependent.

SUBSTITUTIONS:

College training with at least six semester hours per year in one or a combination of education, psychology, counseling, social work, sociology, child guidance, or nursing will substitute for the required experience on the basis of thirty semester hours for one year of experience.

A Mental Health Aide Diploma from a vocational technical college with an approved curriculum from the Louisiana State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education will substitute for six months of the required general experience.

NOTE:

Most vacancies will be filled by promotion. Completion of an in-service training program administered by the department may be required.

Job Distinctions:

Differs from Psychiatric Aide Supervisor 1 by the presence of supervisory responsibilities over several wards. Psychiatric Aide Supervisor 2 positions serve as second-line supervisors.

Differs from the Psychiatric Aide Training Instructor by the lack of responsibility for assisting the professional staff with the instruction of formalized comprehensive training programs for psychiatric aides and by the presence of direct-line supervisory responsibilities over psychiatric aides.

Examples of Work

This position supervises and manages a resident/patient care service consisting of a number of wards during an assigned shift. This involves specific nursing assignments and will be responsible for total resident/patient care. Will provide comfort, maintain cleanliness and safety for the resident/patients.

VFMC is a specialized 24-hour medical facility operating with 150-175 staffed beds, with a license capacity of 299 beds. All beds are licensed hospital beds. The facility operates a small hospital unit surveyed by health standards using hospital licensing requirements. The remainder of the facility is surveyed annually under CMS and state standard guidelines for long term care facilities. Specialized units include 10 beds for acute and sub acute care for clinically complex patients (respiratory care, bariatric care, complex wound care, etc.) and the only inpatient tuberculosis program in the state. One patient care building houses 100-110 residents with a combination diagnosis of mental illness/chronic medical conditions. The facility is staffed with a table organization of 216 classified positions and 20 unclassified positions with a budget in excess of $25 million. The physical plant consists of two patient care buildings, administrative building, activity buildings, support service buildings, staff residences and a variety of storage and special purpose structures located on a 157 acre site with its own fresh water system, sewer system, chiller and boiler systems and electrical distribution systems. This facility has control of passage with a security gate at entrance.

35% Supervises and manages resident/patient care services consisting of a number of units during an assigned shift; prepares work schedule and assignments for Nursing Assistants and follow-up on assignments as designated. Approves and disapproves leave as requested by Nursing Assistants. Submits work schedule and leave paper to timekeeper as required.

35% Instructs and supervises Nursing Assistants in the proper care and supervision of resident/patients and therapeutic intervention. Orients new employees to unit/building. Evaluates job preferences of Nursing Assistants. Participates in administering disciplinary action when needed.

10% Make rounds of inspection, review/records, and monitors the environment to ensure unit safety and sanitary conditions. Reports observations of residents/patients needs to the nurse in charge. Assists in restraints as needed.

5% Performs duties of Nursing Assistant when necessary.

5% Assists in emergency situations.

5% Exchange report of activities as shift change.

5% Performs other duties necessary for a smooth operation of the unit
