Position Summary:
The Professional Advisor position is a 12-month position in the Reddie
Student Success Cener. Professional Advisors assist students in the
development of an educational plan including: choosing a program of
study, clarifying educational goals, and monitoring student progress
towards program completion.
Professional Advisors provide students with information to guide
academic decisions and work with faculty advisors and deans to address
academic matters and connect students to campus resources. Professional
advisors may present academic orientation information to student groups.
Professional advisors use various technologies to maintain student
communication files and may prepare reports as requested by the Office
of Academic Affairs.
Duties & Responsibilities:
– Serve as student advocate
– Encourage student persistence and completion by serving as a
resource for information and assistance
– Assist students with selection of major/courses while providing
connections to faculty advisors, career development, and long-term
planning assistance
– Assist students with use of University communication tools, learning
management system, and student information system (such as: Outlook,
Canvas, and Banner)
– Review academic standing of students for possible intervention,
support, and referrals
– Demonstrate dependability, punctuality and consistent attendance
with ability to maintain full schedule of student appointments
– Demonstrate listening skills and openness to various forms of
student communication
– Assess the general needs of students and visitors to the Reddie
Student Success Center.
– Participate in recruitment and student support activites and
programs
– Maintain a working knowledge of current career exploration and
employment trends by participating in learning opportunities
relevant to academic advising and coaching student success.
– Influence an energetic and positive work atmosphere of clear
communication among colleagues, mutual respect and collaboration,
and unified focus of student academic success
– Prepare reports, student communications, and special projects as
assigned in communication with the Office of Academic Affairs
– Promote the public image of the University to all students and the
community in a friendly, welcoming manner
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Successful applicants will demonstrate a high degree of professionalism
and attention to detail.
Advisors should be able to navigate degree requirements and academic
policies with the ability to multitask, solve problems, and work
collaboratively with others.
The ideal candidate will have a passion for student success and the
ability to maintain dependable schedules and accurate information
concerning student performance.
