Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Research Teaching Specialist IV to work in the Amaro Research Lab within the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey.
Under the direct supervision of the Principal Investigator, Dr. Christina Amaro, the purpose of the RTS-IV position is to coordinate research lab activities. Broadly, the Amaro Research Lab aims to improve psychosocial outcomes for youth and families, including siblings, impacted by pediatric cancer and sickle cell disease. This RTS-IV role will focus on current research projects pertaining to:
  • Building and testing a web-based single-session intervention (SSI) for adolescent siblings of youth with cancer
  • Engaging with youth and parents through a Community Advisory Board
  • Using mixed methods, such as surveys and qualitative interviews
  • Conducting systematic and scoping reviews related to psychosocial interventions to support well-being in youth and families
The RTS-IV will be involved in highly specialized and technical research within the lab, such as recruiting participants, conducting qualitative interviews and data collection, maintaining databases, and supporting dissemination of research findings.Among the key duties for this position are the following:
  • Participates in all aspects of research and ensures compliance with study protocols. Monitors progress of projects. Reports to the Principal Investigator on project progress, problems, and the need for adjustments.
  • Recruits, screens, enrolls, and consents participants for studies per project timelines. Ensures participant completion of study activities per protocol. Maintains study recruitment, accrual, and participation documents.
  • Creates surveys using survey software programs as directed. Abstracts information from medical records per protocol, maintaining confidentiality of data.
  • Engages in data collection, including conducting semi-structured qualitative interviews and administering surveys per study protocol.
  • Responsible for study data entry, data management, preliminary data screening, and data cleaning throughout the project. As directed, provides support in other data processing and analysis. Prepares reports containing findings, analysis, conclusion and recommendations (i.e., grants, summaries, etc.), as requested.
  • Build, refine, and maintain content for the web-based single-session intervention for adolescent siblings of youth with cancer.
  • To enhance recruitment and data collection efforts given participants busy schedules, research activities may require flexible (i.e., evening or weekend) activities on occasion per project demands. Any changes to the work schedule will be discussed with Dr. Amaro in advance.
  • Assists with progress reports, administrative, regulatory, and study accrual/progress updates for all assigned studies.
  • Prepares materials for IRB submissions and renewals.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • A Masters degree in a relevant science or related field (e.g., Psychology, Public Health, Social Work, Health Education), or a Bachelors degree plus one (1) year of research experience required.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple project responsibilities and deadlines.
  • Computer literature with proficiency and working knowledge of database and reporting tools, such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.
Preferred Qualifications
  • At least one (1) year of behavioral science research is preferred.
  • Individuals who wish to prepare for a career in psychology, public health, biomedical sciences, or affiliated field should apply for this position.
  • Applicants of diverse and underrepresented backgrounds are especially encouraged to apply.
  • Written and oral proficiency in Spanish is a plus, though not required.
  • Skills with survey building software such as REDCap and Qualtrics as well as qualitative software programs such as NVivo or Dedoose preferred.
