VCMC is a fully-integrated, comprehensive system of hospital, clinic and specialty services. Santa Paula is an acute, 49 bed general community hospital. The hospital system provides access to health care to all residents of our county, with special emphasis on providing access to care for the underserved and those facing barriers.

THE POSITION: Under general direction and following established medically-approved policies and procedures, the Senior Registered Nurse-Hospital implements specialized skilled nursing processes in the designated hospital units of Ventura County Medical Center and Santa Paula Hospital.

This is an opportunity to gain experience in a variety of units within the Perioperative Services D epartment including Pre-op, Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), Gastrointestinal Lab (GI lab), and Interventional Radiology (IR), Nuclear Medicine (Nuc-Med), and Pain Clinic services. Together, these units support the overall surgical process, from preparation through recovery and specialized interventions. The Senior Registered Nurse-Hospital will work at both Ventura and Santa Paula locations.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE: The ideal candidate for this position will possess a keen eye for detail, ensuring that all protocols are meticulously followed that accurate records of patient care and interventions are maintained. They will d emonstrate strong critical thinking and communication skills to collaborate effectively with all members of the surgical team to ensure optimal patient care.

Additionally, the candidate should be a flexible and adaptable team player who maintains composure in stressful situations while upholding high ethical and professional standards. Flexibility is key, as this position may require the candidate to move freely throughout their shift, across multiple departments to cover specific needs, shifts, and assignments.

The candidate must be willing and able to respond to after-hours, weekend, and holiday calls, including trauma emergencies, within the designated response times. Compassion and empathy are essential. The candidate will provide reassurance and support to patients, families, and support persons, while respecting diverse backgrounds and needs of each individual.

What We Offer:

The County of Ventura offers an attractive compensation and benefits package, subject to eligibility requirements, that includes:

EDUCATIONAL/BILINGUAL INCENTIVE: Incumbents may be eligible for an educational incentive of 2.5%, 3.5%, or 5% based on completion of an Associates, Bachelors, or Masters degree that is not required for the classification. Incumbents may also be eligible for bilingual incentive depending upon operational need and certification of skill. In order to qualify for this incentive, incumbents in eligible positions must take and pass the applicable bilingual fluency examination.

CERTIFICATION PAY: $0.813 per hour based on scheduled work week hours for each qualified certification up to a maximum of five (5) certifications. One of the five certifications may be paid at $2.00 per hour for a National Certification.

EVENING SHIFT DIFFERENTIAL – 7.5%

NIGHT SHIFT DIFFERENTIAL – 15%

WEEKEND SHIFT DIFFERENTIAL – $2.00 per hour

CONTINUOUS COUNTY SERVICE INCENTIVE PAY: 1% for 7 years, 1.25% for 12 years and 1.5% for 17 years

PRECEPTOR PAY – $2.50 per hour

HOUSE SUPERVISOR PAY – $4.00 per hour

CHARGE NURSE PREMIUM PAY – $2.50 per hour

FLOAT NURSE PREMIUM PAY- $2.50 per hour

IN HOUSE REGISTRY PAY:

Non-overtime is 1.75 straight time base hourly rate

Overtime is 2 times base pay straight time base hourly rate

STANDBY PREMIUM PAY – ¼ of regular hourly wage or Federal minimum wage (whichever is greater)

FLEXIBLE CREDIT ALLOWANCE: Biweekly contribution towards medical, dental, and/or vision insurance from authorized plans.

PENSION PLAN: Participation in the Countys defined benefit plan.

Senior Registered Nurse-Hospital is represented by the California Nurses Association (CNA) and is eligible for overtime compensation . Salary placement will be determined according to the current California Nurses Association (CNA) memorandum of agreement.

The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill current and future Regular (including Temporary and Fixed-term), Intermittent, and Extra Help vacancies for this position only. There is currently one (1) Regular vacancy within Surgery General Major department at VCMC.

Examples Of Duties

Duties include but are not limited to the following:

Implements the nursing processes (assessment, planning, implementation of care plan, evaluation of patient response); revises plans as needed; when providing care for patients in a variety of settings, including preoperative and post-operative units, interventional radiology (IR), Nuc-Med, GI and Pain Clinic services at either VCMC or SPH;

Administers basic and advanced competent nursing care in accordance with VCMC/SPH policies and procedures and Patient Bill of Rights;

Provides care to both inpatient and outpatient populations in pre-op, post-op, IR, Nuc-Med, and Pain Clinic;

Provides education regarding complex health and patient problems to pre-op and post-op patients, and family/support person;

Participates in hospital and/or nursing administration care committee and staff meetings;

Reviews, identifies, reports, and corrects deficiencies in practices, products, or equipment as necessary;

Participates in chart reviews to identify deficiencies in nursing practices;

Develops, implements and documents performance improvement processes;

Recognizes problem situations and takes appropriate steps leading to correction;

Coordinates patient care conferences;

Practices and role models consistent, courteous, and respectful patient/family centric interaction and communication;

Serves as a preceptor for new graduates, re-entry nurses, etc.; and

Performs other related duties as required.

Typical Qualifications

These are entrance requirements to the examination process and assure neither continuance in the process nor placement on an eligible list.

EUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCE:

Requires two (2) years of full-time professional registered nursing experience including two (2) years of full-time experience in the operating room (OR), Intensive care unit (ICU), or emergency department (ED) .

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must possess and maintain a current, valid license as a Registered Nurse issued by the State of California.

Must have a current, valid Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certification by first day of employment.

Must possess a current valid Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.

Must possess a current valid Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.

Must possess a current valid Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) certification.

Must be willing and able to take after-hour, weekend, holiday and trauma calls.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:

Comprehensive knowledge of:

the principles, practices, and techniques used in advanced nursing care of ED, ICU, or OR units;

clinical nursing skills; assessment, safe medication administration, monitoring vital signs, and providing preoperative and postoperative care;

proficient use of equipment specific to each setting: pre-op, post-op, GI, IR, Nuc-Med, and pain clinic;

Working knowledge of:

performance improvement processes, hospital based/nursing committee practices, and patient and staff education methods;

the standards of care required for preoperative and postoperative patients;

the standards of care required for patients undergoing IR procedures, radiation safety practices, moderate sedation, and post-procedure care;

the standards of care for patients undergoing GI procedures, such as preoperative care, moderate sedation, and post-procedure recovery, safety protocols, intraprocedural, infection prevention strategies, safe patient handling, and universal protocols;

indications and contraindications for medications commonly used in preop, post-op, IR, GI, Nuc-Med and Pain Clinic settings, including sedatives, analgesics, contrast agents;

Working ability to:

think critically and problem solve to quickly assess patient conditions, identify potential complications, and make informed decisions during emergent situations;

multitask the care of patients in fast-paced environment;

adapt quickly to different departments, patient populations, and procedural demands to support preop, post-op, IR, Nuc-Med, GI, and Pain Clinic;

provide compassionate individualized care that centers on the specific needs of the patient in various stages of treatment;

self-direct continuing education needs, provide a positive role model and public image;

work proficiently in emergency and/or stressful situations;

maintain confidentiality of patient/client information;

work effectively within a multidisciplinary team, across multiple departments;

effectively establish and maintain working relationships with medical staff, co-workers, patients and the public; and

communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Skills in:

time management;

timely and accurate documentation of patient care;

the use of the Electronic Health Record (EHR) to document patient information, provided interventions, treatments, and patients responses.
