Job Responsibilities/Duties
The Department of Energy (DOE) Hanford tank farms contain approximately 56 million gallons of radioactive and chemically hazardous wastes, most of which originated during the reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel to produce plutonium for defense. The mission of the DOE River Protection Project (RPP), one of the worlds largest and most complex environmental cleanup projects, is to protect the Columbia River by eliminating the risk to the environment posed by this waste. The Tank Side Cesium Removal (TSCR) Engineering organization consists of 10 engineers who provide engineering support to the TSCR Operations organization.
The Engineer will provide engineering support to the WRPS mission within the Engineering organization. Support the TSCR Operations organization by providing technical/engineering services for the deployment and operation of processes and equipment for TSCR. The position includes processes support and monitoring, equipment troubleshooting and maintenance, testing, development work packages and procedures analytical support, supporting field implementation, and operation the TSCR system.
The position has the following responsibilities:
– Support the preparation of necessary documentation including process planning
– Ensure compliance with Authorization Basis regulatory permit requirements.
– Provide technical input to operating/maintenance procedures
– Generate daily/weekly/monthly/quarterly progress reports.
– Interface with other organizations that support TSCR Operations.
– Perform engineering evaluations to support TSCR operations.
– Provide data/process analysis for TSCR Operations and implement process/design improvements based on analysis.
– Provide field support in radiologically controlled areas. as needed.
– Demonstrate the ability to generate alternative solutions using sound engineering principles.
– Act as a fully competent engineer in all conventional aspects of the subject matter or the functional area of assignment.
Required Qualifications
Grade 19:
– Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Engineering or related technical degree; and Nine (9) years experience
Grade 20:
– Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Engineering or related technical degree; and Ten (10) years experience
– Note the essential duties for this grade level are like that of the previous grade level, however the scope of responsibility is larger, and the expected level of performance is increased.
Grade 21:
– Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Engineering or related technical degree; and
Twelve (12) years experience
– Note the essential duties for this grade level are like that of the previous grade level, however the scope of responsibility is significantly larger, and the expected level of performance is greatly increased.
Desired Qualifications
– Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to perform as a member of a team.
– Knowledge of operational process control principles and problem solving.
– Willingness to support off-shift/on-call work when required.
– Strong written and verbal communication skills, along with the ability to convey and present ideas/information effectively to peers and management.
– Knowledge of effective nuclear and non-nuclear operations practices, startup, and conduct of operations principles.
– Knowledge of leadership principles and strategies.
– Experience with chemical process engineering, including topics such as ion exchange, evaporation, heat transfer, mass balances, and process design.
– Proficiency using Microsoft Excel.
– Previous experience working in a nuclear facility or nuclear project.
– Provide mentoring and leadership for junior engineering staff.

Compensation & Benefits
In accordance with the companys philosophy on compensation for exempt and salaried non-exempt employees, WRPS takes into consideration a variety of factors when determining initial salary to include assigned job scope and responsibility, a candidates qualifications as compared to internal comparators performing in a similar role, and the external labor market. A salary offer will be made within the targeted hiring range posted. Note a candidates prior salary history will not be taken into consideration.
Hiring Range Minimum: $111,588
Hiring Range Maximum: $170,463
