Summary:
The Safety & Emergency Management Manager manages risks and coordinates risk reduction activities in the physical environment with regards to emergency preparedness and safety. Oversees all BHH & MCH safety programs and emergency management operations in order to maintain a safe environment for patients, visitors, and personnel. Prepares & manages budgets, oversees quality, provides educational opportunities, develops policies and procedures for Safety and Emergency Preparedness programs. Works closely with the Integrated System Emergency Preparedness Work Group and System Safety Initiatives.

Chair of Safety & Health Committee & participate in other sub committees of this committee
such as Emergency Management and Workplace Violence Prevention Committees
Organize meeting agendas and ensure documentation of the meeting with discussions and actions
reported based on outcomes of event reports
Recommends & assists with organizing with Materials Management trials of new products to enhance
the MO’s safety programs
Disseminates information to Department Directors/Managers and others regarding safety risks
to include toxic and hazardous waste and materials, fire related issues, slip trip and falls, etc.
Provides resources for clarification of safety issues
Directs on going organization wide collection of information about deficiencies and
opportunities for improvement in the Environment of Care
Develops & recommend new emergency preparedness and safety policies to meet new regulatory
requirements or changes in the environment
Ensures timely review and appropriate revision of organization wide safety policies
Develops & recommends new procedures and approaches to safety and loss prevention
based on reports of incidents, accidents and other relevant information
Conducts building and grounds environmental tours on a periodic and regular basis to
detect code violations, hazards and incorrect work practices and procedures as it pertains to safety.
Maintains written reports from committee, departmental representatives on actions
taken by departments and resolution of hazards as it pertains to safety.
Review summaries of deficiencies, problems, failures and user error related to managing
Safety, Security, Hazardous Materials & Waste, Emergency Preparedness, Life Safety,
Medical Equipment, and Utility Systems
Participates in the reporting and investigating of all incidents that involve personnel,
patients or visitor injury as well as occupational illness or property damages
Ensures quarterly summaries of actions taken as the result of organization wide monitoring
activates including quality improvement & assessment and risk management
Measures and evaluates effectiveness of all major components of the environment of care,
using established goals
Insures the hospital is following state and federal regulations
Meets with the appropriate managers of the Environment of Care functions for
review and evaluation of their programs
Assists Director of Facilities Management with developing a budget for safety related programs
Maintains ongoing Emergency Management & Safety education for self to comply
with updated standards and regulations
Assists with review, development, and participation in safety training for hospital staff
(orientation, annual& skills fair.)
Presents in-services to various departments on request
Assists with the development and revisions of departmental response plans
Oversees the process of the Hazard & Vulnerability Assessment
Leads the hospital in the preparation and completion of the required disaster drills each year
meeting the CMS and Joint Commission requirements.
Organize hospital disaster critiques for the identification of areas to improve
Prepares an after-action reports for dissemination
Participates in community, county & statewide disaster planning and drills.
Attends county and state emergency preparedness meetings
Maintains disaster equipment and supplies inventory as issued by FEMA and the MO’s
Other Information:
Associate’s degree relating to healthcare emergency management and safety or a minimum of 4 years related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must be NIMS Certified.
Bachelor’s preferred.
NIMS certified.
Minimum of four years’ experience in healthcare emergency management and safety. Strong communication skills.
