Summary
Leads research, design, and development activities to improve NYPA’s energy services. Designs, constructs, and tests and operates equipment. Ensures that standards of quality, cost, safety, reliability, timeliness and performance are met throughout all engineering activities.
Develop design solutions for NYPAs protection and control and associated communication systems, perform system disturbance analysis and recommend protective relaying system modifications and/or additions. Assures adherence to applicable North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) standards to maintain and operate NYPA assets
Responsibilities
Assist senior staff and supervisor on a full range of design modification projects, equipment applications and failure research, engineering studies, and operations and maintenance activities.
Perform site visits to observe construction and assist in the administration of on-site technical support.
Perform occasional emergency response, including outside of normal business hours.
Assist in the coordination of work with other disciplines and departments for the successful development and execution of projects.
Perform research on applicable codes, standards, and procedures and apply it to work tasks appropriately.
Work under close supervision, receiving advice and guidance from Engineers and Senior Engineers, as well as Managers/Directors.
Perform various routine tasks planned to provide experience and familiarize the engineer with his/her work group, engineering methods, practices, and programs of the Authority.
Gather information (site, vendors, and other engineers) for Protection & Control engineering tasks.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Basic knowledge of one or more of the major practice areas within Electrical Engineering.
Competent in the use of Microsoft Office applications.
Basic verbal and written communication skills
Ability to effectively manage and prioritize multiple projects with guidance.
Awareness of applicable codes, standards, and regulations.
Ability to perform basic engineering calculations, and contribute to the development of specifications, scopes of work, reports, and design packages.
Solid quantitative skills with the ability to analyze data and report results (e.g. load flow studies). This includes engineering theory, physics, calculus, basic statistics, and computer skills.
Basic understanding of power system theory.
Ability to draw conclusions based on data analyses.
Ability to make recommendations concerning data analysis procedures.
General engineering knowledge, and a basic understanding of the utility industry.
Education, Experience and Certifications
Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering, or equivalent, from an accredited college or university.
Exposure to electric utility industry preferred.
Good understanding of power system theory preferred.
Minimum 1 year experience
Physical Requirements
Approximately 25% travel primarily within NY State.

The New York Power Authority is committed to providing fair, competitive, and market-informed compensation. The estimated salary range for this position is: $71,700.00 – $98,580.00. The salary offered will be determined based on the successful candidates’ relevant experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
