The University of Miami, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, has an exciting opportunity for a Pediatric Optometrist to work in in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

The optometrists perform ocular examinations to detect disease and defects in vision. Patients are managed refractively and therapeutically within the scope of practice allowed by the Florida Board of Optometry. The Staff Optometrist practices optometry and supervises the work of both optometric residents and 4th year optometry externs. The staff optometrist participates in clinical research when possible/asked.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Performs comprehensive ocular examinations

Sees and treats patients in the ophthalmic emergency department

Diagnoses eye and vision problems as well as some conditions caused by systemic diseases

Examines visual acuity, visual fields, and color perception

Assesses ability to coordinate and focus eyes

Prescribes glasses

Makes recommendations on low-vision rehabilitation

Analyzes ophthalmic and laboratory test results and develops treatment plans

Administers drugs to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of vision problems

Prescribes drugs to treat eye diseases

Performs post-operative exams and facilitates post-op care

Assists with emergency walk-ins as needed to facilitate clinic flow

Research Duties:

As opportunity arises, assists in clinical research with ophthalmology faculty and optometric staff members

This includes clinical research exams, compiling data and publishing findings

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge and confidence to treat patients with a variety of ophthalmic conditions

· Ability to order and interpret ophthalmic testing to aid in diagnosis

· Ability to deal tactfully with patients

· Excellent attention to detail

· High level of self-discipline

Education Requirements (Essential Requirements):

Doctor of Optometry degree

Current/valid FL Optometry license

Work Experience Requirements (Essential Requirements):

One year of relevant work experience in a medical setting required.
