Description:

Under the direction of a lead or supervisor, employees in this classification, HVAC Mechanics perform skilled heating, ventilating, and air conditioning work at the journey level.

Troubleshoot, maintain, and repair all types of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration equipment.

Work in a wide variety of environments, such as office, library, food preparation and storage, research, shops, and laboratories.

Install, inspect, repair, maintain, and modify various heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems in office buildings, auditoriums, residential buildings, and research facilities.

Do routine troubleshooting of various heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems; repair and restore them to proper operational service.

Assist in installation, maintenance and modification of complex instrumentation and controls for HVAC systems; work independently to adjust, replace and maintain standard controls.

Perform electrical work (through 480V) as required for maintaining and repairing HVAC systems. Work includes replacing fuses, motors, transformers, wiring, contactors, controls, and disconnect switches, etc.

Connect and disconnect pipe lines and fittings and perform plumbing work pertaining to HVAC (such as cutting, soldering, brazing, connecting and disconnecting pipe lines, and replacing fittings and valves) Perform preventative and predictive maintenance services as directed by Supervisor or Lead Mechanic.

Maintain records, and assist in procurement of components and spare parts.

Additional Skills & Qualifications:

Journey level knowledge equivalent to four years completion in an apprentice program as a journey mechanics, with a minimum of four years’ actual work experience in the trade or a combination of equivalent education and work experience.

Valid California Non-commercial Class C Driver’s license.

Must have current EPA Certification and/or Universal Technician Certification.

Must be skilled in the use of tools, materials and equipment of the heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning trade.

Must be able to read blueprints, and work from prints and sketches.

Must work in compliance with building codes and industry standards, and in compliance with various safety standards.

May be required to have the ability to obtain and maintain a California Non commercial Class license
