Duties: The Department of Black Studies at the State University of New York (SUNY) at New Paltz invites applications for a full time, tenure-track appointment, at the Assistant Professor rank, with the primary responsibility of teaching courses within the Department of Black Studies, to begin in August 2025. We are interested a generalist who has a strong interdisciplinary, comparative, and transnational approach to cultural production and expression, historical investigation, and social, cultural, and structural analysis. This individual should demonstrate expertise in understanding the diverse experiences of Black people, people of the African continent, and people throughout the African diaspora. Additionally, we seek a candidate that is deeply committed to social justice and has the capability to integrate diverse theoretical and methodological approaches that contextualize the African/Black experience to raise critical consciousness that expands the viability of Black culture/identity.

Our teacher-scholar model includes a 3-3 teaching load that encompasses a range of core courses, electives, and special topics courses. Successful candidates should have a commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching and be able to support students of diverse ethnic, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds. Moreover, the selected candidate will be expected to maintain an ongoing research agenda; thus, applicants should show promise of a strong publication record. Concurrently, the candidate must contribute to the life of the department, institution, and the larger community through research, teaching, mentoring, publishing, and service.

Qualifications: Required:• Ph.D. in Black Studies, African American Studies, Africana Studies, or an equivalent discipline with a focus on Black/African American Studies. ABD candidates with a firm completion date are welcome to apply
