The Work You Will Do:

This posting is for an Environmental Specialist III position located at the Department of Environmental Protections Southwest District Office, in Temple Terrace.

This position conducts inspections at large or moderately complicated facilities, as defined by the specific program, pursuant applicable Florida Statutes and Florida Administrative Code and/or reviews and evaluates permit applications for conformance to State and Federal rules and regulations.

Where You Will Work:

The Southwest District Office is located in Temple Terrace, a small city just outside of Tampa. Tampa is close to the Gulf Coast with beautiful white sand beaches. It is considered a major business center while also known for its museums and cultural offerings. Places such as the Busch Gardens Theme Park, historic Ybor City with its many restaurants and nightlife, the world’s longest continuous sidewalk along Bayshore Blvd., and a sports enthusiast haven are just some of the many activities people can enjoy in the area. There is also no state income tax for residents of Florida. The Southwest District covers 8 counties (Hillsborough, Pinellas, Manatee, Polk, Pasco, Hernando, Citrus, and Hardee).

Your Specific Responsibilities:

This position conducts inspections at assigned large or moderately complicated facilities, as defined by the specific program, pursuant applicable Florida Statutes and Florida Administrative Code and/or reviews and evaluates permit applications for conformance to State and Federal rules and regulations. Writes reports on outcome to inspections as required. The work requires conducting site inspections, completing data entry in applicable databases, providing compliance assistance to regulated entities, and participation in outreach events.

Reviews and makes recommendations on reports, scientific, technical or legal documents.

Provides compliance/technical assistance as needed and/or Regulatory assistance to permittee, company representatives, other department programs, delegated local programs, other interested parties and ES-I and ES-II staff. This includes direct involvement on training of ES-I and ES-II staff.

Recommends enforcement actions as appropriate. Drafts complex enforcement documents and coordinates and leads enforcement meetings.

Keeps applicable databases and Oculus updated as required for facilities/projects assigned.

Provides outreach and/or compliance assistance to large or complicated facilities as needed.

Participates, develops and leads cross-training activities.

Performs other duties as assigned. May volunteer to dive and/or snorkel; must have prior approval and meet diving and/or snorkeling validation requirements in accordance with the DEP Underwater Operations Manual.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of the terminology, principles and analytical techniques of the physical or natural sciences.

Ability to evaluate, analyze and interpret scientific and technical data.

Ability to understand and apply applicable regulations, policies and procedures relating to environmental programs

Ability to determine work priorities and ensure proper completion of work assignments.

Experience in coordinating the training of co-workers.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college; or Any combination of post-secondary education or verifiable related experience, as described in this posting, for a total of four years.
