Description:
Involved with registration, collection, processing, and quality control of specimens, receives and instructs patients, processes lab orders and distributes laboratory reports.
Minimum Skills, Experience and Educational Requirements
Lab Assistant
1. High School Diploma.
2. Ability to read, speak and write English effectively; and be able to demonstrate skill in communication, both written and spoken.
3. Proficient use of computers.
4. Phlebotomy training certification preferred.
5. Experience preferred.
Lab Assistant II/Lead Lab Assistant
1. High School Diploma.
2. Secondary Education / Phlebotomy Program or 4 years Laboratory experience.
3. Performed work successfully as a Lab Assistant I with above average annual evaluations, in order to be considered as a Lab Assistant II.
4. Ability to read, speak and write English effectively; and be able to demonstrate skill in communication, both verbal and non-verbal, as well as written.
5. Proficient use of computers.
6. Phlebotomy training certification preferred.
7. Experience in a laboratory setting a must, and must have served a minimum of one year successfully as a Laboratory Assistant I at NOCH or have an MLT degree in order to be considered for a Laboratory Assistant II
8. Demonstrated Leadership ability; training of new staff will be required of all Laboratory Assistant II’s, and they must have strong good problem-solving and critical thinking skills. Laboratory Assistant II’s will be excellent team players/mentors and capable of leading small process improvement teams. Successful candidates will be well-respected role models with great credibility that display behaviors such as honesty, integrity, directness and respect.
9. Serves as a knowledgeable resource; is very current on departmental and hospital policy and procedure, and is dedicated to the success of others on team.
Critical Demands of the Job
1. Physical ability to respond to emergency and patient care needs.
2. Sufficient manual dexterity to operate equipment, use computer terminals, draw blood specimens, perform laboratory tests, etc.
3. Ability to lift 20 pounds.
4. Must be able to work independently and be self motivated.
5. Willingness to work flexible hours based upon the needs of the department.
