DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

A Truck Driver operates one or more types of automotive equipment, including a dump truck, other than heavy-duty or specialized automotive equipment, in the performance of duties. Work consists of routine manual and simple mechanical operations of equipment. Incumbents are responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the trucks and related equipment. S/he follows general directions, including work orders to determine work to be done and routes to be taken, from a superior who performs periodic inspections. Incumbents may be called upon to operate heavy-duty equipment in case of emergencies. Supervision may be exercised over Laborers in the loading and unloading of trucks.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

Operates a truck in connection with the collecting, removing and/or transporting of ashes, garbage, refuse, snow, salt, gravel, trees, branches, dirt, supplies, equipment, furniture, etc.;

Operates, during winter months, truck with a plow or spreader in connection with the removal of snow and spreading of salt to clear snow from streets with parked vehicles and other obstacles;

Operates hoists or winches after blade has been attached;

Operates generator pump or air compressor in trucks;

Assists in the loading and unloading of trucks;

Performs minor maintenance work on trucks;

-checks oil and gas level, tire inflation and cleanliness of the truck;

– reports problems with equipment and documents same;

Assists in setting up and maintaining safety zones;

Wears safety equipment as required;

Performs related duties as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS :

Good knowledge of the operation of automotive and simple motorized equipment;

Thorough knowledge of the geography and traffic laws of the city;

Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions;

Ability to work under adverse weather conditions;

Mechanical aptitude;

Dependability;

Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

PROMOTIONAL : Must meet one of following:

Continuous and permanent status as a Laborer in the competitive class in any city department for one year.

OR

Continuous and permanent status as a Laborer I, Laborer II, Housing Custodian, Street Repair Worker, Street Worker in the non-competitive class in any city department for two years.

Special Requirement for Promotional Qualifications

Possession of a current Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License issued by the NYS Department of Motor Vehicles, which must be presented at time of filing application and maintained during employment.

Note: License must allow you to operate vehicles with air-brakes.
