The Cornell University Public Safety Communications Center serves as the vital link between those in need and many resources both on and off campus. Our communications center is its own department with the Division of Public Safety. What Will You Do
In a team-based, often stressful, customer-service focused environment, support the operation of the Cornell University Public Safety Communications Center. Responsibilities include:
- Coordinate emergency and non-emergency response to calls for assistance from the Cornell community.
- Evaluate the situation and determine proper response procedures based on circumstances and facts gathered.
- Multi – task, sort, and appropriately prioritize multiple frequency radio traffic to send and receive critical information.
- Handle sensitive emergency situations in a calm, efficient manner to ensure high level safety and security for those involved.
- Make emergency notifications and coordinate various emergency services with agencies during critical incidents.
- Monitor, interpret, and initiate response of the fire, burglar, and environmental alarm, Closed-Circuit TV, and card access systems.
- Responsible for data entry and retrieval for in-house computer, internet and State and Federal Criminal Justice computer systems.
- Answer and prioritize emergency and business telephone lines for Cornell University Division of Public Safety, perform administrate responsibilities , as well as handle walk-in complaints and provide information and referrals.
Cornell University Public Safety Communications center is staffed by three telecommunications supervisors, twelve full-time telecommunications officers, and one system administrator. The 911 center operates 24 hours per day, seven days per week, 365 days per year and working shifts vary depending on seniority.
The telecommunications officers receive certifications for both Basic and Advanced public safety dispatch training provided by the Association of Public Safety Communications Officials. The 911 center receives all fire and maintenance signals for the campus. The Cornell University Communications Center also serves as a back-up center for Tompkins County 911.
This is a unionized position within the Cornell Police Union. The current rate of pay is $27.57 per hour.

Required Qualifications
- Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.
- Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
- Passionate about working in an organization that values and promotes diversity, equity, inclusion, anti-racism, and wellbeing.
- Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.
- Associate degree or two years relevant dispatching experience or equivalent combination of education/experience required.
- Strong interpersonal communications skills (verbal and written). Prior experience in a job that required multi-tasking with the ability to work well under pressure.
- Must also be able to manage competing priorities while paying close attention to accuracy and details. Solid computer skills and customer service experience required.
- Must be able to work as an effective team member and build and maintain strong relationships.
- Must obtain FBI Criminal Justice Information Services Division (CJIS) compliant certification during on-the-job training.
- Must pass rigid background investigation, including fingerprint check, with no records of conviction, excluding minor traffic infractions.
- Must pass a typing test -minimum requirement for this position is the ability to type at least 30 words per minute.
- Must successfully complete required field training program.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior dispatching experience preferred.
- Radio communication skills a plus.
