Description of Department: The Department of Biological Sciences boasts an outstanding faculty who are committed to a high standard of teaching, research, and service to the college community. We believe in working closely with students to build a learning-centered community where the discovery of knowledge plays an important role in every students academic career. Our department has state-of-the-art facilities and instrumentation for both teaching and research purposes, and because we specialize in undergraduate education, our students have many hands-on experiences. Along with shared facilities such as the Molecular Biology and Biochemistry Center, Great Lakes Institute, microscopy suites, and the 400-acre Rice Creek Field Station, we also have a greenhouse, herbarium, animal care facilities, and a core histology lab.

The Department of Biological Sciences has a long tradition of botanical scholarship and engagement. Our fully curated herbarium (40,000 specimens) currently is supported by a $220,000 NSF grant, which has funded the digitization of our collections to make specimens available through the Consortium of Northeastern Herbaria. Our rooftop greenhouse (ca. 1250 sq. feet) has over 220 plant species with space available for classes and research. Faculty are involved with campus and public outreach activities including conversion of campus garden beds to recognize Great Lakes native plant communities and pollinator diversity as part of the Bee Campus USA initiative. SUNY Oswego is also a member of the Great Lakes Northern Forest Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit, which provides opportunities for research partnerships and funding with various federal agencies.

Description of Responsibilities: The Assistant Professor of Botany will teach courses such as Plant Kingdom, Evolution, and Plant Systematics, as well as topics in their area of specialty. They may also contribute to general education and Honors Program offerings. Additional responsibilities include research with undergraduates, advising, and service.

Required Qualifications:

PhD at the time of appointment with expertise in botany, with the intention of utilizing and contributing to our botanical resources including the greenhouse, herbarium, and Rice Creek Field Station.

Experience with techniques adaptable to undergraduate teaching and research.

A commitment to excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service as well as a commitment to providing meaningful learning experiences to a diverse student population through inclusive pedagogy.

Preferred Qualifications:

Areas of expertise may include plant systematics, plant evolution, phylogeography, and paleobotany.

Post-doctoral research experience.

Teaching experience and grantsmanship.
